What is the difference between an antiseptic and an antibiotic?

Antiseptics are antimicrobial substances; they kill microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses, on the external. They are applied to tissues or skin that have a wound or opening in them to prevent the risk of infections. This is what doctor would apply on a wound before he bandaged it up.

Antibiotics on the other hand are a medicinal substance which is used to destroy microorganisms inside the body through chemical reactions. This is the kind of medicine you would take if you had a fever. They are usually in pill form, such as the first to be found, penicillin.
