Mobility scooter driver takes carpet for a ride

"A pensioner has been caught on camera transporting a large roll of carpet on his mobility scooter.

The mobile phone video shows how the old man, ironically wearing a fluorescent safety jacket, blocks a whole road lane in Wincanton, Somerset, with the carpet roll wedged underneath his seat and sticking out both sides, like wings.

The elderly driver, who is reported by the witness to have been travelling at about 8mph, does pull over at one point to allow traffic to pass.

The scooter veers unsteadily to one side as the pensioner takes a sharp left turn.

The clip, titled 'Only in Somerset', was posted online by Gary McKenna, 20, who followed the man along the road.

He said: "I was in a car with a mate when we saw him and thought it was rather out of the ordinary. We drove past and parked up and waited for him to come past and followed him. I think at times traffic coming the other way could have hit him. I don't know how old the man was, I didn't see his face, but I'd have thought he was in his 70s.""
