Should historic films (e.g. Braveheart) totally reflect the story it is adapting?

I think that history films should have some artistic licence in altering bits such as creating a “goody”, and a “baddy”, but not altering bits such as key events and characters in the story. For example, Hollywood should be allowed to make (in Braveheart) King Edward I a villain, and William Wallace an absolutely innocent and kind man. They should not, however, be allowed to change names of people, places & battles, major tactical decisions (things like if they walked across a bridge, or rode over, would not matter), and change the plot completely. It must essentially reflect the true story of William Wallace, if not the whole thing.
